Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 5, 2026

GearBeta is a small community project, and this policy is written to match what the site actually does — nothing more. We collect the minimum needed to run the platform, and we do not sell your data.

What we collect

  • Account profile. If you sign in with GitHub or Google, we receive and store your email address, display name, and avatar image from that provider. We never see your password.
  • Your contributions. Insights you write, votes you cast, and the contents of your gear closet (which products you own, their condition, and any notes).
  • Affiliate click counts. When you click a retailer link, we increment a click counter for that link so we can see which retailers are useful. This count is not tied to your identity — no personal data is stored with click tracking.
  • Session cookies. We use cookies solely to keep you signed in. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.

What we don’t do

  • No third-party analytics or tracking scripts.
  • No email marketing or newsletters.
  • No advertising networks.
  • No selling, renting, or sharing of your personal data with third parties.
  • No payment processing — we never handle payment data. Purchases happen entirely on the retailer’s site.

How we use your data

Your profile identifies your contributions (your name and avatar appear next to insights you post). Your gear closet powers the verified-owner badge and rack coverage analysis. Votes feed the confidence score on insights. That’s it.

Where your data lives

GearBeta is hosted on Vercel and the database runs on Neon, both in the United States. If you are outside the US, your data is processed there.

Public content

Insights and votes are public by design — that’s the point of a community knowledge base. Your email address is never displayed publicly.

Deleting your data

To request deletion of your account and associated data, open an issue at github.com/mfcasazza/GearBeta (you don’t need to include personal details in the public issue — we’ll follow up to verify ownership). We will delete your profile, gear closet, and votes. Insights may be either deleted or anonymized to preserve threads the community relies on — tell us your preference.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we’ll update the effective date above. Material changes will be noted in the project’s GitHub repository.
